The Tactics of the Imperial Guard Are fairly straight forward, however in many situations they can become so complex it is hard to think through your plan of action clearly. At many times a squad you were relying on can fall apart and retreat, or that mammoth tank may be immobilized. The low armor values of the standard Guardsmen can seem at first as though it creates a problem, but in reality, dosen't truely change the outcome of most battles.

If you choose to collect the Imperial Guardsmen, first you must collect a starting force. I suggest your two troop choices to be 25 guardsmen each. A strong core of 50 guardsmen properly armed can be a challenge to even the greatest and toughest ememies. Due to the low morale and armor of this core unit, two commisars and a command squad are a must. When looking into Elites, you should aquire a speedy unit to begin with. Kasrikin in a Chimera Transport tank are a fast attacking high damage unit.

Now you have a legal, powerful, but relatively cemented army. You should now add both heavy support and fast attacking units. For heavy support, it is the best idea to take a Leman Russ. This 14 armored tank comes standard in most armies and is a must when fighting armies low in number but high in strength. You can equip it with either tank busting power, or infantry slaughtering heavy bolters. For fast attack, I suggest taking a squad of 3 sentinals. They provide good support on the flanks, or as a concentrated bnattery of firepower.
